BIOGRAPHY
Swiss born violinist Nathaniel Shapiro has spent many years developing his craft as a versatile performer and pedagogue. He completed his Doctor of Music (DM) degree in violin performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of music where he also taught as an Associate Instructor under the tutelage of the late Kevork Mardirossian. During his years in Bloomington Indiana, Nathaniel maintained an active performing career as a member of the Cercis String Quartet and the Cavanaugh-Shapiro duo. Nathaniel received extensive chamber music training with renowned artists and pedagogues such as Peter Stumpf, Stephen Wyrczynski, the Pacifica Quartet and Emile Naoumoff. His dedication to chamber music and ensemble playing allowed him to share the stage with distinguished artists such as Emilio Colón, Federico Agostini, Jaime Amador, and Matteo Mela. Formerly the principal second violin of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, Nathaniel's orchestral career has spanned over a decade having been a permanent member of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, a guest artist at the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico (ICOPR), the 2023 Korean National Symphony Orchestra (KNSO) International Academy, and since August 2024, a member of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in Sweden.
Currently a professor of violin and chamber music at the Violonissimo School in Geneva (Switzerland), Nathaniel has been regularly invited to give masterclasses in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Spain) as part of his ongoing collaboration with the social project Barrios Orquestados.

Cavanaugh-Shapiro Duo
The Cavanaugh-Shapiro duo was formed at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Pianist Sean Cavanaugh and violinist Nathaniel Shapiro have now spent many years playing as duo partners and enjoyed sharing performances across the Midwest. Most recently, in collaboration with the Music Department at Vincennes University and the Brown County "Log Church Music Series". In 2020, the Cavanaugh-Shapiro completed a performance cycle of Beethoven's ten sonatas for piano and violin in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. The Cavanaugh-Shapiro duo have also collaborated in larger chamber music settings with various artists and friends.

The Cercis String Quartet is a group of friends committed to fostering human connection through a shared passion for music. Violinists Sun Huh & Nathaniel Shapiro, violist Christopher Alley and cellist Kevin Flynn are alumni of the Indiana University Bloomington Jacobs School of Music. Since 2021, the quartet has been critically well-received throughout the Midwest and Ohio River valley for their engaging and dynamic performances.
Highlights of the 2022–23 season include a residency with the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico including a recital and masterclasses, as well as outreach events for children across the island of Puerto Rico. Their Fall 2022 tour included recitals in Vincennes, IN, and Grand Valley State University, MI, culminating in a featured performance in the Absolute Music Chamber Series in Lansing, MI, broadcast live on WKAR. In October 2022, the quartet collaborated with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music’s Latin American Music Center to spotlight the music of Costa Rican composer Rocío Sanz Quirós as part of their Salón Latino Chamber Music Series.
The Cercis Quartet enjoys collaborations with other artists, including recitals of the Brahms and Mozart Clarinet quintets with clarinetist Kirsten Ahnell, and the Dvorak Piano Quintet Op. 81 with pianist Garnet Ungar.
The quartet’s name comes from the botanical name for the Eastern redbud tree, which flowers in abundance every spring in Bloomington.
